Jacob Taylor, Stephen Jordan and Carl Williams—all fellows in the Joint Center for Quantum Information and Computer Science (QuICS)—are part of a study group that recently authored a report identifying challenges in quantum information science (QIS), particle physics and computing.
The study group, which was convened jointly by the Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) and the Office of High Energy Physics (HEP) in the Department of Energy's Office of Science, met in Germantown, Md., on Dec. 11, 2014.
The group was charged by the associate directors of both programs to identify grand challenges, opportunities and gaps in research at the intersections of QIS, particle physics, and computing, including exploiting quantum systems, probing innovative future technologies, and using QIS as a window to the universe.
Their report, “Grand Challenges at the Intersections of Quantum Information Science, Particle Physics, and Computing,” presents a set of challenge questions along with potential paths forward for the advancement of associated technology and fundamental science insight.
QuICS is one of 16 centers and labs in the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies.
